What’s in the bag 2018

Inspired by other bloggers and fellow Automatticians, here is a guided tour of the inside of my bag! I’m only three weeks into my Automattic lifestyle, so I’m curious how my daily accoutrements will change from year to year.

  1. Plastic File Folder. I don’t even know where this one came from, but I’ve carried it for years. On occasion, I have paper documents, and I detest bent corners, even though I dog-ear books all the time. Loose papers get tucked in here for safe-keeping.
  2. 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. I moved from PC to Apple in 2010 and haven’t looked back. Now, it’s even more fun with stickers! This is my de facto tool of daily necessity, and I love its power, portability, and sleek style.
  3. Mark & Graham Leather Charger Roll Up in Sky Blue. This was a recent, celebratory purchase, but also an impulse buy, and the first thing I’ve ever had monogramed. I was excited to be able to work anywhere, and wanted to keep my cables organized. It turned out much smaller than I expected (serve me right for not reading the specs!), but it’s durable and adorable, so I still love it. It holds a Lightening to USB cable for my phone, a USB to USB-C adapter because Apple, and a USB-C charge cable for my laptop.
  4. 61W USB-C Power Adapter for the laptop. Because power.
  5. Uni-ball Signo 0.28 Pens. These pens have both smooth ink flow and a fine point, making them a perfect match for my smaller handwriting. In full disclosure, while I love these pens, everyone who I’ve shared them with disagrees. I think it’s because they are too fine for most people.
  6. Coach sunglasses. This was a splurge buy when I was on a girls trip in San Francisco in 2014. I had a track record of losing sunglasses, so it wasn’t a rational decision given the price tag. However, I’ve somehow managed to hold onto this pair, I still love them dearly, and I’ve gotten great use out of them over the years.
  7. Moleskine Notebook. I’ve always loved Moleskine, and tend to have a number of them at any given point. The designs brighten my day, and they function as extra brain storage space. This one is brand new and dedicated to work, but my well used Moleskines eventually have color coded tags. What can I say? I like color and organization!
  8. Helpful odds and ends. Floss and a compact mirror (purchased on Etsy, also in 2014) are often used together. Stuff stuck in my teeth drives me bonkers. Advil just in case, but I usually end up giving it to others as I will wait until the last minute possible to take any pills. Simply Gum Mints, which aren’t bad, but just something I grabbed at a coffee shop when I was craving some minty freshness. Travel size L’Occitane hand cream, which is by far the best hand cream for my often dry hands. Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15 by Fresh, which I am hooked on after receiving a sample from Sephora. These last two items are a little on the pricier side, but a little goes a long way and both feel luxurious.
  9. Michael Kors wallet, purchased in 2016. I wanted something slim but organized, and this was the best fit. I’m personally not a fan of brands that splash their names prominently on items, but aesthetics aside, it is an excellent wallet that suits my needs.
  10. Business Card Holder, also purchased on Etsy in 2014. It’s cute but clean, and I tuck both my own cards and others’ cards into it. I find business card culture odd, especially as email signatures now hold a lot of the same information, but there is something fun about exchanging cards. I just got my new cards, so I’m doubly excited. Pro tip: I carry a well used paperclip in my card holder, which is really handy for getting my phone’s SIM card in and out during international travel.
  11. BeatsX headphones. I stole these from Dane, who ordered both this pair and the Apple AirPods with the intention of trying both out, keeping one and returning the other. I was nice enough to let him have first pick, and while I’d prefer the AirPods myself, these still do the trick. The battery life is ok, and they tend to bounce against my collarbone when I run, but I’ve figured out how to get along with them. Once these die, I’ll probably opt for the AirPods.
  12. Anker PowerCore 10000. I have three of these that float around our apartment, and I’m fastidious (which is the nice way to put it), about having a power source with me at nearly all times. This might be because I’ve watched too many horror films and am determined to never be the one who needs to make a call, only to have the phone run out of juice. It could also be because I like seeing “100%” on my phone. In all seriousness, these are highly useful items and I’ve lent them out to strangers frequently, making friends on flights.
  13. Snacks! Some kind of dark chocolate is a given, and the darker the better. I’m a fan of raw almonds, and have relied on them for years as an afternoon energy boost. Fruit is a staple, and a good alternative when I’m craving something sweet. I also love Kind Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt bars, as well as RX Chocolate Sea Salt Bars, but those never last long in my bag.
  14. iPhone 8. It might as well be an extension of my arm, at this point.
  15. Hand Wraps. I have a love-hate relationship with these. I love going to Krav Maga Seattle for the Krav classes, and the wraps prevent my knuckles from getting fairly bloody (tombstone are tough!), but I hate dealing with these unwieldy lengths of fabric! I’ve been eyeing some gloves, so we’ll see if I keep these around for much longer.
  16. Brooks indoor training shoes. These are technically running shoes, but that means they are light and perfect for my Krav classes. I like the pop of color, and, as an added fun touch, the laces say “Dig Deep”.
  17. Aer Fit Pack 2 in Grey. Thanks, Automattic, for my new favorite backpack! This sturdy bag is designed for organized, germaphobic, work to gym professionals who live in wet cities. It’s waterproof, there is a secure compartment for my computer, a multitude of pockets, and plenty of room for more than I am currently carrying. It also has a separate compartment for shoes, which makes me endlessly happy. The top compartment is perfect for all things gym.

Not pictured:

  • A small, glass waterbottle with a bright, mint cover that I picked up when we were in Madrid last year. It’s being cleaned right now, so it didn’t make it in the photo.
  • Gym clothes. No one needs to see dirty gym clothes.
  • Camera! I recently purchased a Sony Alpha a6500 Mirrorless Digital Camera, which has been endless fun. I’m not very good with it yet (as evidenced by the photo accompanying this post), but I’m taking a few classes and feel it will be perfect for travel. I haven’t taken to carrying it around with me regularly, but feel that that will change by next year’s “What’s in my bag” update.

  1. That was a fun read to start my morning. This made me want to clean out my bag too.

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I regularly clean out my bag, otherwise it would be full of miscellaneous receipts.
